When talking about hosting you have a couple of different options. There is shared web hosting where you share server resources with other customers. Then there is dedicated hosting, dedicated hosting is more expensive than shared hosting but you won’t be competing for resources like RAM or CPU processing. When you purchase a dedicated hosting package from a provider like SiteGround, GreenGeeks or A2 Hosting you will be assigned to a dedicated server that you will use to host your web site on. In most cases your hosting provider will monitor and maintain this server.

Most websites will work great on an inexpensive shared web hosting plan. Shared web hosting plans are great for personal or small business websites. If you’re a medium to large company or your website receives a lot of traffic you may want to consider going with a dedicated hosting plan to make sure your customers don’t experience any slowness.

There are several companies that offer great dedicated hosting plans. Check out our top 10 list of GoDaddy alternatives and make the switch.

What is shared web hosting?

Shared web hosting is when your web site shares resources like CPU, RAM and disk space with other websites hosted on the same server. One shared web server might host anywhere from 20 sites all the way up to a few thousand sites. You might be wondering what impact this will or could have on your website. Well, if you share a server that hosts several really popular websites you could potentially experience slowness when loading web pages. However, if your web hosting company monitors their servers like they should and they don’t over allocate them you won’t likely run into this problem. If they see that one site is using up all of the shared resources they will likely move it to another less utilized server. Some web hosting provides like GoDaddy are known for putting to many websites on one server which often leads to slowness and poor performance.

Shared web hosting usually works very well for personal and small business websites. The great thing is once you outgrow your shared web hosting plan you can upgrade to dedicated web hosting or semi-dedicated web hosting. Companies like GreenGeeks and Site Ground will help you move your site to a dedicated server at no charge.

On 9/10/2012 GoDaddy was hacked by “anonymous”. Millions of GoDaddy hosted sites were down for several hours including GoDaddy.com. GoDaddy scrambled to correct the problem but was unsuccessful in fixing the issue for more than 5 hours. This left millions of customers without anyway to access their websites. The same hacker (anonymous) sent a message to GoDaddy via YoutTube last December telling them to stop supporting SOPA. The hacker has said this is not related to SOPA but that its motives will become obvious over time.

The most recent hacks have GoDaddy customers scrambling to find GoDaddy Alternatives. We have personally seen a massive increase in traffic to our site of GoDaddy customers looking to switch to another hosting provider like GreenGeeks, BlueHost or SiteGround.

We received an email from one of our readers that was looking for Godaddy alternatives because they were having problems sending news letters to their readers.. We started to look into this and were shocked at what we found.

We found out that Godaddy only allows you to send 250 emails in a 24 hour period. Now a lot of you might be thinking “wow” 250 emails in one day that’s a lot and I’ll never send that many. Don’t be so sure about that. Most websites start out small and get larger and larger over time. Before you know it you may have a list of 300 or 400 customers. It’s very common for websites to send their customers/readers news letters, updates or just general information. So what them means to you is once your site starts to grow you will likely run into problems when it comes to communicating with your customers or readers. Now if you’re still stuck on GoDaddy don’t worry they have a work around, all it takes is more money… It’s $2.99 per month for every 50 additional relays. Just to be able to send 500 emails you’re looking at $15 more dollars a month just to send emails. If you ask me I think they are giving you the Godaddy nickle and dime special…

There is a better alternative to GoDaddy’s 250 SMTP relay limit. Actually there are a lot of Go Daddy alternatives. I would suggest going with a web hosting company like Bluehost, GreenGeeks or HostGator.

When it comes to SMTP relays most Hosting companies like Bluehost, Hostgator and GreenGeeks give you unlimited SMTP relays. This means there not going to charge you extra money just because your site is growing and you need to send a few more emails.

To find a list of web hosting companies that provide unlimited emails/SMTP relays check out our Hosting Comparison Chart.

Anytime I wanted to make a change to my hosting account I had to click on link after link to find what I needed. It just doesn’t seem like it’s laid out very well. At the time GoDaddy was the only web hosting company that I had used so I didn’t have anything to compare it to and didn’t know what I had been missing.

There has to be a better way! > Easy Button Technology <

Once I switched to HostGator and then later GreenGeeks (both great companies) I discovered cPanel. cPanel is the industry standard when it comes to web hosting control panels. cPanel puts all of the things you need in one location. It allows you to install WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and many other platforms with the click of a button. You can also create email accounts, email forwarders, update DNS and much more. cPanel is so easy to use but extremely powerful. If you’re new to web hosting or an advanced user I would highly recommend looking at hosting providers that offer cPanel. Another control panel that is very similar to cPanel is vDeck. It has the same look and feel as cPanel and operates much like it too. vDeck is used by several web hosting companies but the two biggest companies are probably iPage and FatCow. There are many other godaddy alternatives out there but these are just a few.

You’ve probably heard by now that GoDaddy had supported SOPA. If you’re not familiar with SOPA it stands for Stop Online Piracy Act. While at first glance it sounds like this would be a good thing it’s not. If this bill were to get passed your internet would be censored. If someone categorizes a site as “piracy” you and everyone else in the United States would be blocked from visiting this site regardless if it was really a “bad” site or not. Like many other bills that have been passed to “protect us” from our self, this bill would likely be abused like so many others.

While many other web based companies like Google, Wikipedia, Reddit and several other companies appose the SOPA bill, GoDaddy supports SOPA. For a lot of customers that had already been unhappy with GoDaddy this was the last straw. After GoDaddy announced their support for SOPA they started to see higher than usual cancellations. GoDaddy’s customers started to look for Godaddy alternatives. Some have reported that the cancellations got so bad that they started to drag their feet when customers wanted to transfer their domain names to others hosting providers. After all of this GoDaddy retracted their support for SOPA and put out a statement that they now are against SOPA. Don’t get me wrong I think this is great and all but it’s pure marketing as far as I’m concerned. The only reason why they are against SOPA is because it was costing them money. To me it doesn’t sound like they are really against SOPA their just against losing money. If they want to support what many call the GoDaddy SOPA bill then great support it but don’t change your mind just because you’re losing money.

There are great alternatives to Godaddy. Some of the popular ones include GreenGeeks, Bluehost & HostGator.
